IEEE

IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It is one of the largest professional technical organizations and has a major role in producing the world's electrical and electronic standards. Here's some data I pulled from their website. IEEE Home Page (http://www.ieee.org/)

The IEEE has

more than 365,000 members in over 150 countries, almost 40 percent of whom are from outside the United States. over 68,000 student members. more than 27,000 society affiliates. 307 sections. 1,446 chapters. more than 1,300 student branches in 80 countries. over 300 student branch chapters. more than 147 affinity groups. 39 societies and 3 technical councils.

As of Jan., there were more than 1.1 million documents in the IEEE/IEE Electronic Library. Visit IEEE Xplore(R) for daily totals. The IEEE publishes a total of 128 transactions, journals and magazines. The IEEE sponsors more than 300 conferences each year.

The IEEE Standards Association has more than 8,350 individual and almost 60 corporate members.

About the IEEE The IEEE (Eye-triple-E) is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 365,000 individual members in approximately 150countries. The full name is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although the organization is most popularly known and referred to by the letters I-E-E-E.

Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace engineering and consumer electronics, among others.

Through its technical publishing, conferences and consensus-based standards activities, the IEEE

produces 30 percent of the world's published literature in electrical and electronics engineering, and computer science areas,

holds annually more than 300 major conferences and

has nearly 900 active standards with almost 500 under development.

The benefits of IEEE membership include these offerings:

Membership in one or more of 39 IEEE Societies and three Technical Councils spanning the range of electrotechnologies, information technologies and more

More than 300 local organizations worldwide for member networking and information sharing

Educational opportunities to ensure engineers' technical vitality

More than 1,300 student branches at universities in 80 countries

Public advocacy for U.S. member interests, and for women in engineering and ethics

Special cost-saving and value-added benefits for MEMBERS ONLY

Prestigious awards and recognition of technical and professional achievements

Opportunities for volunteering, leadership and participation in a variety of IEEE activities

Electronic commerce with the IEEE through a variety of Web-based Services.

» About the IEEE IEEE Organizations

Thousands of IEEE member volunteers provide the leadership in IEEE organizations and activities. Supporting these volunteers is a fulltime professional staff.

The IEEE is made up of 10 Regions, 38 Societies, four Councils, nearly 1,300 individual and joint Society chapters, and more than 300 Sections. 1,450 Student Branches are located at colleges and universities worldwide.

The IEEE is governed by a Board of Directors (Board) and Executive Committee (ExCom). The delegates representing the 10 IEEE Regions and 10 technical divisions (IEEE Societies) comprise the Assembly.

Elections are held annually for many of these positions as well as for the top officers.

The IEEE Corporate Activities staff supports the Board, ExCom and the Assembly, and many of the IEEE Committees.

Top officers are the President, who is the chief executive and serves one year. Sharing some of the duties of the Office of the President are the President-elect and the Past President.

The Executive Director is the full-time chief operating officer.

Six subordinate boards govern major areas of IEEE interest. Each has an elected volunteer leader. These interest areas are --Educational Activities --IEEE-USA --Publication Services and Products Board --Regional Activities --Standards --Technical Activities.
