Continued testing results of Vehicle 1and 2

Last weekends road trip in the Ranger Extreme was a mixed bag of results.

Vehicle 1 Ford Ranger Extreme 4x4 Long distance results.

Miles driven 314. 95% Interstate at 70mph. 5% town driving with at least two stops a day over the three day weekend going to and from knife show and the hotel and resturant.

Gallons of regular 87 octane Citgo used was 14 gallons

Acetone ratio of 2.5 ounces to 10 gallon.

Mileage 22.43MPG.

Mileage increase over base of 17mpg: 5.43MPG. Aprox. 32% increase

Weather conditions not optimum for fuel mileage testing. Rain and showers all weekend and very high head winds on the homeward leg. I am not certain to how much effect the headwinds had in reducing mileage. But the head winds were over 40 mph with higher gusts. This had to reduce mileage to some extent. I did notice that on the first leg of the trip mileage seemed to be good but we didn't refuel until we arrived home so all I can report are the numbers as they are.

I have raised the ammount of acetone to 3 ounces per 10 gallons in the next tank full. Most of this driving will be local though.

This is still a marginal improvement over the first test run which gave something like 21.7 miles per gallon at a 2oz. to 10 gal ratio.

All driving was done with the tail gate lowered to reduce air drag at high speeds.

The 22.43 mpg in this vehicle while not as good as hoped so far, this is far better than ever achieved in this vehicle at any time since I owned it. This mileage is about 2.4 miles a gallon above the EPA fuel useage listed for this vehicle for highway driving. Considering that this test also had the high wind, rain and three days of in town short distance driving, this is not terrible in my opinion especially for an off road edition 4x4 pickup truck.

Vehicle 2 Pontiac 95 Bonneville The test data in the past two weeks looks very promising in this vehicle.

End of week one: Acetone to Gasoline ratio: 2oz. to 10 gal.

Miles driven. 324

Gallons used 12 gallons of Hess 87 octane

MPG. 27

Mileage increase over base of 25mpg: 2 mpg. Aprox. 8% increase.

Driving conditions mostly interstate with some slow traffic, 5 days a week commute to work and home and to the store on weekends and for a few short errands.


End of week two: Acetone to gasoline ratio: 2.5oz to 10 gal.

Miles driven. 333.7

Gallons used,11.2 of Hess 87 octane

MPG. 29.8

Mileage increase over base of 25 mpg: 4.8 mpg increase. aprox. 20% increase.

Fueled Friday night with a mix of 3 oz. per 10 gal.

Driving conditions. Same as week one.

I am hoping to break 30+mpg on this vehicle with my wife's commute and on the long distance highway driving I hope to break 32+ mpg.

What is clear is that the ratio for a given vehicle will vary. Also it seems that the more efficient the vehicle the less the percentage of increase may be. But even if the percentage of increase is smaller in a more efficent vehicle the benifits are still worth the trouble with fuel now approaching $2.30 a gallon for regular on the East coast.

I went back and looked at the cost numbers and I see I made an error in totaling costs. I used the whole amount of Acetone added to full tank and didn't average out the amount actually used which lowered total savings.

Correction: With no acetone 9.4 gallons at $2.09 a gallon for 160 mile trip @ 17 MPG. $19.65

With Acetone 7.5 gallons at $2.09=$15.67 + .68 = $16.35 total for 160 mile trip of mixed road conditions. Real world driving conditions.

This should be $2,09=$15.67+.22 (approx. 1/3 of .68 for the anount of Acetone burned in 7.5 gallons of gasoline)=$15.89


Correction: Total savings.........$3.30 for this trip. That would be $20.75 Approx. of savings per thousand miles of this type of mixed city and highway driving in this vehicle.


This should be.......Total savings.........$3.76 for this trip. That would be $23.50 Approx. of savings per thousand miles of this type of mixed city and highway driving in this vehicle.

Correction:

That is the errors made......worked out to be even better than had been reported.

25.5% increase in mileage in Ford Ranger 4x4 Extreme with acetone added in ratio of 2 onces per 10 gallons.

Ok fellows here are the results.

After fueling on Saturday night....see Previous post Testing Begins. Total trip length between refueling: 160 miles Number of starts and stops: 6 , 4 of which were warm restarts, 2 cold restarts.

Driving conditions: 40% city or town 20% Freeway 70 MPH+ 40% Rural Two lanes Weather: Chilly temps in the 40's mixed rain and dry. Some heavy rain that slowed up traffic to a great degree.

Maximum mileage that I have achieved with this vehicle 18MPG.

Normally between 15.5 and 17 MPG in mixed driving.

Ok boys hold on to your seats........160 miles of driving. Topped off tonight and I mean as much as would go in the tank. 7.5 gallons of regular gas used.

Milage on this trip: 21.33 MPG

If I take the base at 17MPG as a median value and that's about right for this vehicle, this works out to an increase of fuel efficency in this vehicle on this run at something just around 25.5% or 4.33 MPG increase.

Cost savings: Regular gasoline at $2.09 a gallon. 4 ounces of Acetone @ $5.44 quart. 68 cents. per full fill with gasoline

Conclusion. I am certain at this point that Acetone does make a difference in milage in this vehicle. While the cost saving is not huge it is significant. Especially when viewed from the stand point if fuel prices continue to rise the 25.5 % on savings in dollars back would also rise with the price of fuel. Second I do think that because of more complete burning of the fuel mixture, emmisions would be lowered and wear on internal engine components from unburned fuel entering the oil and other areas would also make repairs less frequent and less costly.Also air polution should be lowered as a result of more complete combustion of fuels and less gallons being burned. I also believe that at interstate driving speeds in which there would be constant use of cruise control and no stopping as was done in this test additional increases in milage can be gained. I will be taking a 400 mile business trip soon which will be mostly Expressway driving and I plan on continued testing with this vehicle to just see what other gains can be obtained. In the mean time the demonstrated savings is worth the small investment of time at the pump and I am planning to continue to use acetone in this vehicle (test vehicle 1) and tonight we fueled my wifes Bonneville with acetone and gasoline for her tests this week on her trips to and from work.(Test Vehicle 2) I expect better results with her Bonneville as it is a higher fuel efficent car and her driving is nearly all freeway driving. I'll get back to you when I have something on her tests and after my highway tests of the Ranger. Stay tuned.

I started testing Acetone in one of two vehicles on Saturday March, 26th.

Bought a quart of 100% Acetone at Lowes home improvement. Stopped at Walmarts and bought a long neck funnel and a small glass measuring cup that was made to measure small amounts........this cup holds a max. of 4 ounces. Total cost for Acetone,long neck funnel and measuring glass under 10 dollars.

Test Vehicle 1 
2000 Ford Ranger. 4x4 drive factory extreme off road package. 4.0 liter V-6 5 speed automatic transmition. 48,557 miles
Test Vehicle 2 
1995 Pontiac Bonneville. 3.8 liter V-6. 4 speed auto transmition. 129,000 and change.

Both vehicles in very good mechanical condition. Both vehicles had STP injector cleaner run through the week before testing to begin with a known base. Tires have been checked and are at proper inflation.

Test on Vehicle 1
Added acetone at a ratio of 2onces per 10 gallon. 19.5 gallon tank. Actual measuremnt: added 4 ounces of Acetone to tank and then added 10.7 gallons to top off tank.

Initial obsevations. After driving in town for approximately 2 to 3 miles,noticed that the idle seemed to be smoothining out at stop lights. This 4.0 engine is a little radical being an Extreme off road edition. This was noticed both by myself and my wife. While wifey was in doing the food shopping I checked the oil and tranny fluids just to make sure everything was at proper levels. One thing that was noticed was that while in park and idleing to check tranny fluids I had walked to the back of the truck for some reason and I noticed that there wasn't the usual pertol exhaust smell from the exhaust. I mean nothing. I guess people thought I was taking the gas pipe or something. I actually got down and stuck my nose in the exhaust and still nothing. I thought maybe my sniffer was on the fritz so when Linda came out I had her take a sniff.....still nothing even after sitting shut off for twenty minutes and then restart. From this I am of the opinion that there must be something to the theory that the acetone does make the fuel spray in the engine much more efficent by changing the surface tension of the fuel hence all or nearly all the available fuel being delivered to the cylinders is being burnt. Second Observation, while it is still way too early in the testing to make any claims one way or the other concerning increased mileage, I most definately noted an increase in horse power. The drive from Hanover. PA to my home in rural Maryland is just over 20 miles mostly rural driving with one small town to go through. What I noticed is that it was very apparent that I was driving as though I had a raw egg between my foot and the gas pedal. I didn't have to depress the pedal nearly as much as normally. And also by the time we got home the tranny was shifting a lot sooner and more positively. I don't know if by then the computers had made adjustments or what was up. But the vehicle is definately running better and with what seems like less fuel being needed to drive at a given speed. Now does this equal to better mileage, the jury is still out. Tomorrow we are taking it for a 150 mile trip to see her folks. This vehicle has never been a real gas saver, average real world driving rural and town about 18 miles a gallon. So tomorrow will tell the story I guess. I'll get back when I know something more.

Test Vehicle 2: Tomorrow I will fuel it with acetone and gasoline and she will drive it to work next week. The milage on this vehicle with her driving pattern is as predictable as day and night. On her work commutes it's right at 25 mpg this week.. next week and every week. So it will be interesting to see what next Friday brings with this vehicle.
