Viggo's Report of Acetone' Effect on Mileage and Performance in his Opel Vectra

Table of contents

Reports

Summary

Have run 4 tests (4 tanks) per jun 21th 2005, see results below and on the yahoo group database at: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/pes_acetone/database

  • Opel Vectra 1992
  • 1.8 litre 4 cyl injection, 95 octane
  • Tank takes 50 liters gasoline

Normal mileage for local/city driving <50mph is 25.6 mpg (9.2 liter/100km)

Individual Reports

May 17, 2005: Test #1 +10.5%

First tank with acetone completed on my '92 Opel/GM Vectra (1.8liter 4cyl inj). Drove 285 miles. Just small trips of city/local driving (<50mph) only. Normal milage is 25.6 mpg. Using mix ratio of 1:640 acetone (2oz per 10gal) and milage improved to 28.3 mpg, an increase of 10.5%. Have logged in the database. Also worth mentioning that engine runs smoother, esp. noticable when idling. I'm using 1:640 ratio for next tank as well.

May 28, 2005: Test #2 +6.6%

Second tank with acetone completed. Drove 295 miles this time. Used same acetone ratio of 1:640 (2oz per 10gal) as for the first tank, and this was also all local/city driving (<50mph). The results after this tank was a mileage of 27.3 mpg, an improvement above normal mileage (25.6mpg) of 6.6%, a little less than first tank results. The motor still runs a lot smoother than "normal", and lugging at low revs is gone completely, esp for cold engine. So even with no mileage improvement I would still use acetone. Data is logged in the database on the yahoo group. For the third tank I'm changing to a acetone ratio of 1:427 (3oz to 10gal)

June 10, 2005: Test #3 +12.1%

Third tank with acetone completed. Drove 311 miles. Used increased acetone ratio of 1:427 this time (3oz per 10gal). This was local/city driving (<50mph). This tank gave a mileage of 28.7 mpg, an improvement above normal mileage (25.6mpg) of 12.1%, the best result this far.

June 21, 2005: Test #4 +18.4%

My fourth tank since I started the acetone testing on my Opel Vectra. For this tank I planned to go without acetone as a control run, however I ended up filling up the tank when it was 10 liters leftover from test #3. The tank takes 50 liters total, thus I added 40 liters gasoline to 10 liters of 1:427 acetone:gasoline mix. According to my calculations that gives me 10.000 ml / 427 = 23.4 ml acetone mixed with 50.000 ml gasoline => 23.4ml : 50.000ml => 1:2137 => 1oz:16gallons.

After driving 560km, eg. 348miles, I filled up with 43.5 liters which results in a mileage of 7.76 liter/100km (30.3 mpg) !! This is an improvement of 18,4% over the normal 25.6mpg, and much better than I expected with this dilluted mix!!

The driving style was much the same as for test#3, however it is possible that there was a little more smooth driving involved than for the other tests. But even if I cut this result in half I have over 9% better than normal.

I have added the test to the database on the yahoo group (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/pes_acetone/database), and I have also uploaded a graph to the photo section there, of all 25 tests in the database, giving an average improvement of 14% (see the photo named 2005.06.21 - 25 tests)

I have now filled up again with no extra acetone. I filled 43.5 liters, so this time there was 6.5 liters leftover from the 1:2137 mix. This gives a gasoline dilluted to a ratio of 1:16438 (1oz:128gallons) from which one should expect no effect, eg. back to normal mileage. We'll see. I now plan to test with no acetone to see if I can confirm the old normal mileage around 25.6 mpg.
