A One Meter Long Neutron Tube Schematic

Colliding Plasma Toroid Fusion by Electron Power Systems Ltd.

Quoting from website home page

Electron Power Systems™ (EPS) has discovered a clean, non-polluting energy technology. It will enable clean electricity production for one-tenth its cost today. It will potentially lead to low-mass, high-energy power for cars, aircraft and space launch vehicles. It does not use fossil fuels, and does not produce pollution.
EPS has discovered a plasma toroid that remains stable without magnetic confinement, by using background gas pressure for confinement instead. These plasma toroids are observed to remain stable for thousands of times longer than classical plasma toroids, which opens the way for new clean energy applications.

    • Six-kilowatt Power Supply using the Colliding EST Fusion Reactor (pdf) - "We are developing a six-kw power supply that is non-polluting, and uses no fossil fuels or nuclear fuels. In production it will cost about the same as present gasoline powered six-kw power supplies, but will run for a year continuously on about a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of hydrogen and boron, compared to 7300 gallons of gasoline. It can be scaled up into a larger generating plant where it will produce electricity for about $0.0005 per kw-hr, compared to $0.05 per kw-hr today. This white paper describes a three-year project to build a prototype 6-kw power supply.

Interview

Overview of Technology

From Clint Seward by email, Feb. 23, 2006

Plasma theory: we asked scientists at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center to verify the physics. Dr. Chen's paper confirms our discovery of a self-organized plasma toroid that remains stable with or without magnetic field containment. MIT PSFC was our research institute, so they were very careful before they agreed to publish the basic paper. This MIT confirmation of a new discovery is remarkable enough that it makes this technology worth reviewing further since the implications for energy are remarkable in turn.

Intriguing experimental observations: We have recorded thousands of images of plasma toroids that we produce. They are similar to the one on the website. We will publish them when we can. Many were confirmed by Dr. Guss, another MIT PSFC scientist.

Confinement: we routinely confine the plasma toroids with very low pressures of 1/1000 atmosphere. This is possible because of the self-organized nature of the plasma toroids which minimizes the plasma forces. An important part of the plasma toroid is the internal magnetic field that causes the self-organization and the stability. One of the papers on the website describes the formulas and experimental data to confirm this, and the balance of forces in experimental results is demonstrated. Ken Ware was a coauthor, and you can contact him at: kware@er2s.com

Acceleration: We have accelerated the plasma toroids, and our MIT consultants completed a mini accelerator design (similar to a neutron tube) that shows we can potentially reach energies of 110keV or so. This was described in a final report to Dr. Ware.

Plasma pressure: You are correct in that the plasma pressure will be low. This is because it is a self-organized plasma. All charged particles are in a defined pattern relative to each other, a kind of matrix. The electrons are in separate shells from the ions. The ions in a single shell have all the ions held by interacting forces in fixed positions relative to all other ions, a kind of matrix formation.

Energy potential: The potential is that the overall plasma toroid can be accelerated (we have done so), potentially to high enough velocity that two plasma toroids can be collided. This is similar to the TRISOPS project that collided two plasma toroids of deuterium ions and produced neutrons. TRISOPS showed that two colliding plasma toroids will adhere to one another, but not coalesce, and that collisions between ions will occur in the surfaces. This then becomes two self-organized plasma toroids, collided at 110keV, to collide ions within their matrix surfaces.

Our calculations show that we will produce many orders of magnitude more energy than the TRISOPS project, and will pass break even. This is what we are working to confirm.

Short Q&A

Hi,

Let me answer these briefly, as you ask them.

Sigma: What do you see EPS doing for space propulsion compared to current rocket technology? Single-stage to orbit? More than one flight per fueling?

Clint: The EPS technology provides a simple way to replace 260,000 kg of chemical rocket fuel with one kg of hydrogen/boron. A present day NASA launcher is 95% fuel mass at take off. So, for starters, launchers would be 95% smaller, and 95% less expensive.

Our numbers show that this would enable a small single-stage to orbit solution.

Our numbers show that more than one flight per refueling is feasible.

Sigma: Would the propulsion be similiar to the EPS beam weapon technology or would it have to be modified?

Clint: First some background: The EPS technology provides for two things: first, a compact energy generator, and second, a means to accelerate EST Spheromaks (stable plasma toroids).

One can envision getting into space from earth using a jet engine by generating lots of heat, heating air, using heated air as a propellant. This jet engine would get from ground into space without propellant (using ambient air) and with 95% less system mass. Once in space, one would generate the energy and use it to accelerate EST Spheromaks, in a way similar to the beam technology.

Sigma: How quickly could this technology get us to the moon? Or to Mars?

Clint: The EPS technology would get us to the moon or mars far more quickly than any chemical or nuclear rockets. The reason is simple: the EST Spheromaks can be ejected at much higher velocity, thus imparting a much higher momentum change. This is especially important in that the EST Spheromak spaceship will have 95% less fuel mass, and so will be quite small.

Sigma: What is your idea for a spacecraft with regards to your technology and upcoming technologies i.e. nanotube-composite shell, molecular computers, EPS micro-fusion generator and EPS plasma toroid engines?

Clint: The EPS technology would allow a simple spacecraft that is 95% less expensive than “conventional" spacecraft, could launch anywhere (needs no special fuel handling, and the fuel is inherently stable and safe). New materials and computers will improve this further.

One additional thought: the EST Spheromak spaceship will enable interstellar travel by allowing refueling in space. If one were to use hydrogen, one can refuel in space since hydrogen is available virtually anywhere (try finding rocket fuel or enriched uranium or plutonium, so NASA can only plan for missions that carry enough of Earth fuel to get them back).

Second, since the EST Spheromak can be accelerated to near relativistic velocities, the spaceship can travel at near the speed of light, meaning one could get to the nearest star system (4.4 light years) in about 5 years.

Hope this is helpful.
