Explanations of fuel technology

  • Combustion Chamber graphic (http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/new_cars/technology/engine/FSI/stratified_charge.html) - illustrates the cycles of an engine in a combustion chamber. (audi.com) It would be nice if we could produce graphics like this to illustrate various key principles regarding fuel economy.
  • After Combustion: Detonation! (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviationspace/e46d5b4a1db84010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html) - This Popular Science article about aircraft engines discusses why the speed of the flame spread is more important than the completeness of combustion. In short, there are two kinds of combustion: the old, familiar, slow kind of burning, called deflagration, and another, much more energetic process called detonation. "Deflagration-to-detonation transition," or DDT, is the process by which an ordinary flame suddenly accelerates into an immensely more powerful detonation which generates more thrust for the amount of fuel combusted than a deflagration.

Hydrogen Injection

  • Canadian Hydrogen Energy Company (http://www.chechfi.ca/tehisyst.htm) summary of research of using hydrogen for combustion enhancement in internal combustion engines.
  • Green Car Congress (http://www.greencarcongress.com/2005/11/hydrogenenhance.html) suggests hydrogen improves the combustion speed and stability.
  • MTZ magazine (http://www.all4engineers.com/download.php;file=m10-05-08.pdf/dir=mtzww/key=69c2036329bf99e85d4638c3a8a12455) - Hydrogen-Enhanced Combustion article

Direct Injection

GDI Gasoline Direct Injection

  • Theory of GDi (http://www.autozine.org/technical_school/engine/petrol1.htm)- Mitsubishi claimed GDI consumes 20 to 35% less fuel, generates 20% less CO2 emission and 10% more power than conventional engines.
  • After rocky start, direct-injection engines make a comeback. (http://svc.cc/board/html//article.php?sid=176) - Lack of low sulfur gasoline slows spread of GDI.
  • Orbital Technology (http://www.orbitalcorp.com.au/orbital/directinjection/dioverview.htm) - Direct injection (DI) boosts the efficiency of conventional internal combustion gasoline engines. It involves injecting the fuel directly into the cylinder (combustion chamber) of an engine, instead of indirectly through an inlet port. Direct fuel injection creates a finely atomised fuel cloud allowing engines to run with greater fuel efficiently and with reduced emissions output.

Diesel versus Gasoline

TDI Diesels

NOTE: ' If the number of diesel vehicles in private use went from less than 10% to over 60% of the private US vehicle fleet, mirroring European diesel engine adoption rates, we would see a 25% reduction in the amount of oil used in the US.'
