Directory:Nuclear Remediation

From PESWiki

Index of technologies that neutralize or mitigate radioactive waste. With such technologies developed, nuclear power once again becomes attractive, because the spent fuel no longer is a hot issue. U.S. DOE knows of this technology but chooses to not promote it for some reason that they are not disclosing.

OBJECTIVE
: Present a prioritized listing of the best resources and most promising up-coming technologies that deal with nuclear remediation. With input from knowledgeable people worldwide, this index can become the most reliable and helpful place to find information about nuclear remediation.

Proven Technologies

  • Areva to add uranium recovery operation (http://www.tri-cityherald.com/1406/story/287447.html) - Areva (http://www.areva.com/) and the University of Idaho (http://www.idahobusiness.net/archive.htm/2008/08/20/U-of-I-Areva-partner-on-green-nuclear-waste-treatment) signed an agreement to work together to use a jointly developed process to remove enriched uranium from ash left from reducing the volume of contaminated debris by incineration. The incinerated debris includes items such as gloves and rags from the production of fuel for commercial nuclear power reactors. (Tri-City Herald; Aug. 22, 2008)
  • Turning Radioactive Waste Into Clean Fuel (http://www.israel21c.org/bin/en.jsp?enDispWho=Articles%5El1586&enPage=BlankPage&enDisplay=view&enDispWhat=object&enVersion=0&enZone=Technology) - With the help of Russian scientists, Israeli firm Environmental Energy Resources (http://www.eer-pgm.com/), has taken the laws of science and turned them into a useful invention for mankind - a reactor that converts radioactive, hazardous and municipal waste into inert byproducts such as glass and clean energy. (Israel21c; Mar. 18, 2007) (Thanks TreeHugger' (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/03/turning_radioac.php)')

  • Eagle Research (http://www.eagle-research.com/browngas/fabuses/possib.html) - Says that Brown's Gas has now been officially proven (in Canada) - "in seconds, easily and extremely inexpensively. This neutralization treatment can take place right at the nuclear reactor so there is no need to transport or store nuclear waste."

  • Flame-free Incineration (http://www.nti.org/db/nisprofs/russia/fissmat/ufuel/novosibi.htm) - Scientists at the Institute of Catalysis, led by Professor Zemfir, have developed a device that neutralizes radioactive waste through flame-free incineration in a catalyzer. Capable of incinerating 50 metric tons of waste annually, the device was installed at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant. According to A. Kostin, the factory's deputy technical director, "the device is based on a catalytic converter that provides low temperatures for the oxidation process," thus reducing the amount of nitrous oxides produced. Experiments have confirmed the method's efficiency and environmental safety.

Proposals

  • Is Yucca Mountain the Only Solution to Radioactive Waste? (http://www.freeenergynews.com/Directory/NuclearRemediation/Geer/YuccaMountain/index.html) - Larry Geer reviews several techniques of accomplishing nuclear half-life modification. Asks why the Department of Energy is ignoring these solutions.

When Politics Gets in the Way of Progress

  • Brown's Gas remedy for nuclear waste was rejected (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=411405755714495752&q=Browns+gas+additional+properties) - ~1992 video (12 mins) featuring New York Assemblyman, Dan Haley (http://www.cancercontrolsociety.com/bio2001/haley.html), gives evidence for the ability of Brown's gas to significantly reduce the radioactivity of treated samples; yet the U.S. Department of Energy turned away. (Google Video/P.A.C.E. (http://pacenet.homestead.com/Transmutation.html)) (Thanks Ken Rasmussen, NEC)
  • Testimony of BonnieE Bonneau (http://www.nuclearactive.org/wipp/hearings/bonneau.html) - "There is a possibility that cold fusion might neutralize radioactive waste in a short period of time, but the DOE has blocked experiments exploring this possibility." (March, 5, 1999)

The head of the U.S. Department of Energy recently testified before Congress saying that the only solution to nuclear waste was to bury it in Yucca mountain. The DOE is aware of many of the technologies mentioned on this page. Why they do not promote the development of these solutions is up for speculation. There is huge money in burying nuclear waste. Neutralizing the waste is must more cost effective -- and good for the planet. (Thanks SDA) (reference: Larry Geer) Aug. 28, 2004)

"It's fertilizer."
