The TESNIC wind turbine is based on the principles of the Tesla turbine, extracting the wind power via adhesion, in addition to the classic drag and lift extraction. This enables the TESNIC turbine to achieve a very high efficiency, with the cost of electricity produced below the utility price.

TESNIC is in the pilot and pre-commercial stage to demonstrate the turbine capabilities in real life conditions and to complete the required steps to start commercialize their turbines.

How it Works

The wind turbine developed and patented by TESNIC is based on the same principles as the Tesla turbine.

The wind turbine patented by TESNIC is a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), defined by a rotor assembly having more than 200 disks stacked one on top of each other with a narrow gap between them (≈2mm). The rotor also includes on the circumference of the stacked disks a plurality of twisted airfoil blades as such to redirect the air flow tangentially to the disks surface.

Around the rotor there is a stator assembly playing the role of wind capture augmenter and to neutralize the turbulences on the rotor. The arrangement of the stator vanes and of the rotor blades is as such to redirect the wind tangentially to the disks assembly regardless of the wind direction. The disposition of the stator blades also prevents the disruption of rotation by shielding the rotor from turbulences or from any wind direction shifts.

The TESNIC turbine extracts the wind energy via several ways. First the wind energy is extracted in the standard way lift and drag via the blades on the circumference of the rotor. Then the airflow enters in the gaps between the disks where, as in the case of the Tesla turbine, it adheres to the surface of the disks which will contribute significantly to the rotation of the rotor. This new way of extracting the wind power via adhesion, in addition to the classic drag and lift extraction, enables the TESNIC turbine to achieve a very high efficiency.

The TESNIC turbine is able to operate with the same efficiency in turbulences as the vanes disposition shield the rotor from any turbulence.

Moreover, the vanes disposition hides the rotor as such that the moving parts of the turbine are barely visible from the ground level. Accordingly, the TESNIC turbine is esthetically in harmony with the surrounding areas, being that urban or rural, residential or commercial.

The TESNIC turbine is very lightweight being suitable for rooftop mounting. For instance a 3.6kW TESNIC turbine weights less than 330lb (150Kg).

Costs

The turbine purchase cost, including all its electrical components, is extremely attractive as the cost of produced electricity with the TESNIC turbine is generally below the utility price where the average wind speed is above 5 m/s. The objective is to offer a “turn key? TESNIC turbine of 3.6 kW under $10,000 USD (installation included).

TESNIC was incorporated in May 2005, focusing it’s activities in the wind energy sector. TESNIC had conceived and patented a new type of wind turbine suitable for urban areas.

The idea of the TESNIC wind turbine emerged from necessities more and more common among many home owners, the need of having electricity even in the case of a utility power failure and the need to reduce the dependency on the power utilities by using renewable energies.

To solve this problem, TESNIC has done extensive researches on the current wind technologies. The conclusion of these researches was that the current technologies face overwhelming problems for their installation in urban areas. The most important issues being the high purchase costs of the current technologies with an unattractive return on investment, their limited efficiency in turbulences and the fact that their esthetics is hardly acceptable in urban areas.

For these reasons the solution proposed and patented by TESNIC is completely different from the current wind technologies and uses different ways to extract very efficiently the wind energy.

Based on a distributed energy generation model, the new technology will allow its future owners to reduce their electrical bill and to make a positive contribution to the greenhouse gases reduction effort.

TESNIC’s objective is to commercialize its innovation on the global market in the next 2 years (as of 2008).

Is there a specific reason why you don't make a full Tesla wind turbine without blades?

"There are some significant difference between the Telsa turbine and a wind turbine. In the Tesla case the high pressured fluid have no choice but to pass through the nozzle. In a wind turbine case, we are talking about free fluid dinamics. The stator vanes that have to redirect the wind in tangent to the rotor represent an obstacle in front of the wind and the air flow will take the path of less resistance, a.i. go around the turbine and very little wind will actually hit the rotor."
