Directory:Wind:Largest
From PESWiki
Wind companies rolling out utility-scale plants like to say that theirs will be the "largest." When we're talking about the future, which has not yet materialized, it's fairly easy to make that claim as long as it is larger than anything that presently exists. Who actually ends up being the largest will be a matter of history once the future becomes the present. We've created this page (on April 21, 2008) to track who is presently the largest, and whose claims to be the largest in the future are actually the biggest claims.

Offshore
- Atlantic Array (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Array) - Is an offshore wind farm planned for the coast of North Devon, England.
- Arklow Wind Farm, Dublin Ireland (http://ge.ecomagination.com/site/showcase/arklow.html) - The first stage of the world's largest wind farm opened in June 2004. Driven by the advanced 3.6MW turbine developed by GE Energy, the facility's seven turbines deliver an impressive 25MW.
- London Array, Kent, Essex (http://www.londonarray.com/) – Approved in 2007, 1,000MW wind farm will include 341 turbines, cover 90 square miles and generate enough electricity to power 750,000 homes - a quarter of Greater London’s households. Expected to be world’s largest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Array)
- Whitelee, Glasgow, Scotland (http://www.reuk.co.uk/Whitelee-Wind-Project.htm) - The Scottish Executive has finally approved plans for the largest onshore Wind Farm in Europe which will now be completed in 2009 at a cost of £300m. Scottish Power's Whitelee Project Wind Farm will consist of 140 wind turbines generating a total of 322MW of power.
Windfarms
- Green light for massive wind farm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/glasgow_and_west/7517176.stm) - Plans to build Europe's largest onshore wind farm in South Lanarkshire have been approved by Scottish ministers. The under-construction wind farm on Eaglesham Moor will have a total capacity of 322MW. Currently the biggest operational wind farm in Europe is the Maranchon wind farm in Guadalajara, Spain, which has a generating capacity of 208MW. (BBC Newss; July 21, 2008)
- Briscoe and Noland Counties, Texas, Texas Panhandle (http://www.technologynewsdaily.com/node/7607) - Texas already holds the record for the world's largest wind farm, the 735-megawatt Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center, which was completed by FPL Energy, Inc. in late 2006. It also is the site for the nation's second-largest wind farm, the 504.8-megawatt Sweetwater wind project, the fourth phase of which attained commercial operation in May 2007. Boone Picken intends to erect 2700 turbines across 80,940 hectares of the Texan panhandle. The scheme is five times bigger than the world's current record-holding wind farm and when finished will supply 4000 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 1 million homes.
