IBM Projects Holographic Phones, Air-Driven Batteries - A survey of 3,000 IBM scientists predicts that by 2015 we will be using mobile phones that will project a 3D holographic image of callers. They have also predicted that batteries would move beyond lithium-ion construction to more energy-dense materials, greatly increasing their power capacity and allowing them to recharge by ‘breathing’ the air around them. Anton HHO self-running with 400-W load - Here's an update from German researchers, Oliver and Valentin. Watch as they wheel a self-running hydroxy system down a hall, into an elevator, down 4 floors, and out into a courtyard. Not only does it keep itself running, but it generates 400 Watts extra to power a light. "Merry Christmas 2010," they say, with their "Think Different" presentation. (PESWiki; December 25, 2010)

  • Electromagnetism > Nikola Tesla >
Tapping Tesla to Save Trapped Miners - The noted pioneer in electricity and radio showed over a century ago that a magnetic wave generator could be used for wireless communications. Basically, the generator works like an electromagnet. Powered by standard alternating current or battery, it runs electricity through a wire that is coiled around a metal cylinder, creating a harmless, low-energy magnetic field that extends for hundreds of meters. (ScienceMag; Aug. 20, 2010)

  • Solar > Infrared >
New solar cells could even work at night - Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory say they've developed a new kind of solar cell that can generate energy even at night. The key is the ability to harvest infrared radiation as well as visible light. Almost half of the available energy in the spectrum of solar radiation resides in the infrared band, and infrared is re-emitted as heat by the Earth's surface after the sun has gone down. • Fuel Efficiency >
High-speed trains pollute 29 percent less than traditional trains - The AVE consumes less due to the intrinsic features of the high speed system, such as its more standardised speed profile and the lower number of stops and curves during the journey. The consumption of auxiliary services (air conditioning, lighting and ventilation) is also reduced in direct proportion to speed. (PhysOrg; December 14, 2010)

  • U.S. Government and Energy >
The Energy Equation: Practical Fact vs. Political Fiction - Frank Burk points out many examples, current and recent that show how when politics get involved, the problems they were supposed to resolve get worse due to poor policy. Politically motivated energy solutions often exacerbate the problems they were supposed to counteract. Bureacracy is not good at solutions. (American Thinker; December 14, 2010)

  • Trends >
Bill Gates is seeking carbon-free energy - Gates says that the biggest challenge is not persuading Americans to buy more efficient refrigerators or trade in their SUVs for hybrids; it's figuring out how to raise the standard of living in the developing world without wrecking the climate. Achieving that will require an "energy miracle" — a technological breakthrough that creates an inexhaustible supply of carbon-free energy. "The right goal is not to cut our carbon emissions in half. The right goal is zero." (Rolling Stone; November 11, 2010)
