  • Solar / Trends > Zeitgeist >
U.S. Solar Energy in 2011 - Rhone Resch of the Solar Energy Industries Association writes: "In contrast to some of the recent headlines, the solar energy industry is a strong, thriving industry in the United States that is creating jobs and lowering costs for the consumer. In 2011, a number of myths about the solar energy industry circulated nationally. Let’s set the record straight." (CleanTechnica; December 30, 2011)
  • Wind / Trends > Zeitgeist >
Top 10 U.S. Wind Energy Stories of 2011 - In a year-end report, the American Wind Energy Association says: "Wind power hits 20 percent overall in two states. It contributes a record 50 percent for a period of time in another. And the turbines that pump out all those electrons? Their cost has dropped 33 percent." (CleanTechnica; December 29, 2011)

  • Communities > Safe Haven Villages >
We made it to 'Best Places to Live Off the Grid' - Our intentional community project, Safe Haven Villages, is being featured at MSN as one of ten "Best Places to Live Off the Grid". I think it was our mention of "wanting to power the community with something more exotic than just solar or wind, such as cold fusion" that got us on that list, even though we don't have any official dwellings yet. (MSN; December 26, 2011)

  • Nanotech / Solar > Solar Paint > Quantum Dots >
Researchers develop paint-on solar cells - A team of researchers at the University of Notre Dame have developed an inexpensive solar paint that uses semiconducting nanoparticles to produce energy. "By incorporating power-producing nanoparticles, called quantum dots, into a spreadable compound, we've made a one-coat solar paint that can be applied to any conductive surface without special equipment." • Trends > Zeitgeist >
The Year in Energy - Surprising successes helped offset disappointing failures in solar, biofuels, and nuclear power. This was supposed to be a big year for energy-related technology. Fukushima set back nuclear. In 2011, average prices for solar panels dropped by almost 50 percent from 2010 levels. (MIT Technology Review; December 27, 2011)
  • Trends > Zeitgeist >
2011 in Energy: The Year of... - "...It seems likely that 2011 will instead be remembered for big, unpredictable events like the Fukushima nuclear accident and the Solyndra bankruptcy scandal, along with several major trends that reached critical mass this year." (TheEnergyCollective; December 26, 2011)

Raw Free Energy News Hopper - Here are some items I placed in my news hopper, intending to format them for inclusion in the news; but limitations of having only so many hours in a day prevented it. Rather than have them go unannounced altogether, I present them in a raw format. (FreeEnergyNews; December 26, 2010)
  • Batteries > Paper / Alt Fuels > Biomass > R&D >
Sony demos paper-fueled battery - Sony recently showed off a new bio-cell battery that breaks down paper in order to create power. The process starts with an enzyme suspended in water. When paper is dropped in, the enzyme starts to break it down and produce glucose that can then be harvested and used to power a battery. (GizMag; December 21, 2011)

A Noble Lie: Oklahoma City 1995 -- Bombing was a False Flag Event - A new documentary shows with copious evidence that the bombing was not the act of one man but was instigated by sinister forces within the U.S. government who wanted to use that event as a pretext to finally pass Bill Clinton's Anti-Terrorism bill, and which was a factor in the police state NDAA bill recently passed allowing for arrest and killing of U.S. citizens without trial. Santa as a Metaphor for God - Okay, this is way off topic from free energy (though I do tie that in at the end). Just something to consider about some interesting similarities between Santa, which makes children and adults smile more during the holidays, and God, who puts a smile on the soul year round. The role angels play as the primary functionaries in that role. (PESN and BeforeItsNews; December 18, 2011)

A Bad Year for Solar Energy - By virtually any yardstick, 2011 was probably a year the PV solar panel industry may like to forget. First and foremost, of course, there was the Solyndra case, which quickly morphed into a major political issue that will likely be continually revisited during the upcoming U.S. presidential campaign. China's heavily-subsidized solar panel industry may present significant ongoing challenges... (Environmental Leader; December 13, 2011)

  • Wind > Farms > Cost and Reliability >
Does this Picture Spell Doom for Wind Power? - The wrong kind of wind? It's a phrase that haunts those desperately trying to justify wind farms in Britain. However, apologists for the giant turbines now face the unpalatable truth that structures designed to operate in windy conditions literally fell flat on their faces when the wind became a bit too strong. According to the latest figures, one turbine worked at 15 per cent of its capacity last year, generating generated electricity worth an estimated £100,000 but had to be subsidised with £130,000 of public money. Nikola Tesla's Earthquake Machine - He put his little vibrator in his coat-pocket and went out to hunt a half-erected steel building. Down in the Wall Street district, he found one--ten stories of steel framework without a brick or a stone laid around it. He clamped the vibrator to one of the beams, and fussed with the adjustment until he got it. Tesla said finally the structure began to creak and weave and the steel-workers came to the ground panic-stricken, believing that there had been an earthquake... (BeforeItsNews; December 7, 2011)
  • Nuclear > Cold Fusion > Overviews >
Technology Forecast: Worldwide Research on Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions Increasing and Gaining Acceptance (pdf) - U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency report on cold fusion from November 13, 2009 has been unclassified. "Scientists worldwide have been quietly investigating low-energy nuclear reactions (LENR) for the past 20 years. Researchers in this controversial field are now claiming paradigm-shifting results, including generation of large amounts of excess heat, nuclear activity and transmutation of elements. Although no current theory exists to explain all the reported phenomena, some scientists now believe quantum-level nuclear reactions may be occurring. DIA assesses with high confidence that if LENR can produce nuclear-origin energy at room temperatures, this disruptive technology could revolutionize energy production and storage, since nuclear reactions release millions of times more energy per unit mass than do any known chemical fuel." MU research chief wants 'cold fusion' puzzle solved - Rather than squabbling over the merits of studying cold fusion or jumping to the conclusion that excess heat produced at room temperature is a nuclear reaction, the scientific community needs to back up — all the way to the top of the scientific method. That’s the opinion of Rob Duncan, vice chancellor of research at the University of Missouri. (Columbia Tribune; December 3, 2011)
