Doug Furr's replication of the OC MPMM Magnet Motor

An open source project.

Contents

Present Status

Doug received all the components (bearings, magnets) on Jan. 11, but other situations arising in his life slowed his initially expected progress rate.

He has said that if this design works, that he could mass produce a demonstrator within a couple of months. It will probably take some time to come up with a design suitable for such a production.

On Feb. 5, 2008, he completed his 1.5-scale version; he but has not been able to get it to accellerate or maintain speed. This could be attributed to several important differences between his replica and the original, including:

  • magnet strength - Doug's stator magnet is very strong, and proportionally larger
  • device material -
  • holding screws - metalic
  • size of bearings and holders

Some observations. On Feb. 5, we had three of us there, one to focus on one stator magnet. Once or twice, we were able to get all three stator magnets spinning anti-gear-wise; and it did decrease the deceleration rate. We tried placing loose rotor magnets atop the stator magnets, but did not see accelleration or maintenance of speed. As the rotor spins quickly, the stator magnets are fairly stable to just stay somewhat stationary, slightly wobbling as the magnets pass by.

On Feb. 12, Doug built a new casing for the stator magnets so they could be turned with the air hose. We were never able to get that one spinning anti-gear-wise, even though we could spin the stator magnet very rapidly in that direction.

Fabrication

Some photos showing the progress Doug is making on building the 1.5-scale MPMM magnet motor replica. Photos by Michael King of Orem, Utah USA.

The indentations to the inside of the rotor magnet holes is for a (brass) screw to go in to hold the magnets in place, to keep them from flying out. He will also drill a small hole from the bottom, through which he can push the magnets out.

About Douglas K. Furr

Douglas K. Furr received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College, Hartford CT. He owns and operates a production facility in Orem, UT USA, including lathes, injection molding machines, EDM, CNC machines.

He has been listed at the PES Network, Inc "Mechanical Engineer" since their founding in November of 2003. Before that, he was involved in the parent company, PerenTech, which was founded to help manufacture and market the Perendev magnet motor. With the inventor, Make Brady's permission, Doug built a 1/4-scale replica of the Perendev Magnet Motor, which they were not able to get to run. Many people have seen photos and a video of that motor. PerenTech subsequently left negotiations with Brady.

In August, Doug built a replica of a gravity wheel design by Scott Hall, which turned out to have been propelled by a slight incline in Scott's garage floor.
