Magnet Motors

Analysis by LightRider of Mylow's all-magnet motor videos as part of the Mylow Magnet Motor open source project.

LightRider has programmed some software that works with an external sensor to automatically perform an acceleration analysis of any of Mylow's videos very quickly. The output is presented as a graphic with time on the x axis, and rotation speed on the y axis. The lines that deviate from the acceleration curve in the graph are the mistakes of the sensor due to camera movement.

More graphs pending showing the rpm analysis of some of the other videos for which high-resolution footage is available.

  • In this demo, Mylow shows his all-magnet motor sitting on a glass-top table, starting from zero then slowly accelerating through nearly the duration of the video. He also shows a top view as well as a view under the motor. He also shows his face. His wife is heard in the video as well, witnessing the motor and concurring that there are no hidden wires or other contraptions, but that the spinning motion is just from magnets repelling magnets.

Apr. 29 Bar-Magnet Motor Clockwise

In the first part of this video, the sensor data are corrupted due to camera movement. Once the camera is put on a tripod, a constant speed is shown. In the third part of the video, after Mylow stops then lets the motor begin spinning again, an acceleration curve emerges.

Apr. 30 Bar-Magnet Motor Spinning in Reverse

In this video there were two accelerations (in the graphic represented by the two curves).

Actual RPM values

The page is titled "Motor RPM" but there isn't a single RPM value shown. RPM is a more meaningful and standard unit than "seconds per revolution", so I'd suggest using it in following analysis.

I (Touko Pouko) made a similar RPM measurement program a few days ago. According to my analysis, in the "running in reverse" video the motor reaches the speed of exactly 87 RPM. 87rpm.png

87 RPM happens to be a standard revolution speed of certain type of small servo motors, such as shown here: http://www.servocity.com/html/87_rpm_gear_motor.html . Further analysis should try to establish if there is any static or sound charasteristic to this type of motors present on the videos, or whether the acceleration curve is more consistent with a 60:1-geared servo motor than an all-magnet device. March 22 Video

Here is LightRider's analysis of Mylow's March 22 video.

The data show clear deceleration (consistent with spin-down with no magnet assist) during the time that the entire motor is visible, including the shaft.

Points to trickery of some kind to get acceleration during other times, when the whole motor is not in view.

March 17 -- First Video

Here is LightRider's analysis of Mylow's March 17 video -- the very first one he posted showing alleged acceleration followed by reaching an equilibrium speed.

That data shows clear deceleration (consistent with spin-down with no magnet assist) during the time that the entire motor is visible, including the shaft.
